Career Preparation

Career Preparation programs are district-approved and consist of 16 credits of study related to a career field, including a minimum of four credits (120 hours) of related work experience. They consist of two Focus courses, one Support course, and Work Experience. These programs assist students in identifying and accessing specifically focused and appropriate career transition opportunities in one or more related areas. 120 hours of community based work experience is a required component of these programs. (see Ministry Policy on Work Experience)

Students may begin coursework in CP programs in grade 11 and continue working through to the end of grade 12 and graduation, with the work experience component occurring during grade 12. The program provides work experience in specific skill areas. Career Preparation programs are designed to prepare students for further study in a particular field at a post-secondary institution in either an apprenticeship, a degree granting program, or a diploma or certification program. CP programs may also provide students with entry-level skills for employment.
